FutureA
Grand theft in the 82nd pick: the Browns steal Ponds and grade out a A-. The rest of the league will want that one back. D'Angelo Ponds tumbling to the Browns in pick No. 82 is a gift they did not have to think twice about. One of the weekend's best, top to bottom, and a A- to show for it.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
They will need Rutledge to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
The kind of weekend a front office frames and hangs on the wall.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
Carnell Tate
In the Round 1 slot they get a difference-maker at receiver at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick24
Rnd1
Caleb Lomu
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick39
Rnd2
Elijah Sarratt
They went early on Elijah Sarratt in No. 39, and the value did not follow. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick40
Rnd2
Emmanuel Pregnon
By-the-book stuff, Emmanuel Pregnon at pick 40 squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick70
Rnd3
Malachi Fields
No drama and no debate, Malachi Fields went about where he belonged in slot 70. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick82
Rnd3
D'Angelo Ponds
Steal is underselling it; D'Angelo Ponds at pick No. 82 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick107
Rnd4
Zakee Wheatley
Zakee Wheatley in the 107th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick112
Rnd4
Keylan Rutledge
They liked Keylan Rutledge enough to skip the value, taking him in the 112th pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick139
Rnd5
Mike Washington Jr.
A tidy little value on Mike Washington Jr. in the Round 5 slot, a step better than break-even. The roster fit checks out.
Pick144
Rnd5
Kyle Louis
They paid sticker price for Kyle Louis in the 144th pick, and that is fine. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick147
Rnd5
Domani Jackson
Domani Jackson in the 147th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick161
Rnd5
Aamil Wagner
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Aamil Wagner. It fills a real need, too.
Pick204
Rnd6
Nolan Rucci
A reach for Nolan Rucci in No. 204; a little patience would have been rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick248
Rnd7
Joey Aguilar
Circle this one: Joey Aguilar at pick 248 is a fall that decides a draft. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
