Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
A-
ValueA
NeedB+
TradesA+
FutureB-
The Cowboys let Tyson fall and pounced. Final grade: A-. When a board-topper like Jordyn Tyson slides to the 221st overall pick, you do not overthink it, and the Cowboys did not. It holds up to a second look, which is why it earns the A-.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Bottom line, they did the job about as well as it can be done.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Mansoor Delane
In the 12th pick they get a press-man option on the boundary. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick38
Rnd2
Spencer Fano
They will replay Spencer Fano at pick 38 for years; that is how good the value is. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick69
Rnd3
David Bailey
A top-tier edge rusher at a bargain, David Bailey in Round 3, Pick 5, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick95
Rnd3
Jermod McCoy
A cornerback of that caliber at the 95th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick112
Rnd4
Carnell Tate
Carnell Tate at No. 112 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick126
Rnd4
Sonny Styles
You do not let a linebacker like Sonny Styles reach pick No. 126 and blink. They did not. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick131
Rnd4
Kayden McDonald
Circle this one: Kayden McDonald at the Round 4 slot is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick150
Rnd5
Kenyon Sadiq
Kenyon Sadiq in slot 150 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick165
Rnd5
Jonah Coleman
Jonah Coleman at the 165th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It fills a real need, too.
Pick177
Rnd5
Michael Taaffe
Michael Taaffe in the Round 5 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick215
Rnd6
J.C. Davis
Steal is underselling it; J.C. Davis at pick No. 215 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick220
Rnd7
Colton Hood
Colton Hood at the 220th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick221
Rnd7
Jordyn Tyson
Jordyn Tyson in No. 221 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick225
Rnd7
Akheem Mesidor
Somehow Akheem Mesidor was still sitting there in pick 225, and they pounced on premier edge rusher value. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick228
Rnd7
Genesis Smith
They barely believed it either: Genesis Smith still on the board at slot 228. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
