FutureA+
Good, not great, for the Browns: B+. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Browns did exactly that with Fred Davis II in the 204th overall pick. It does the job without flash, and the B+ reflects it.
On value alone, Coleman makes the weekend a net positive. The Browns indulged a want in Boettcher while a need in edge rusher stayed open.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick Analysis
Pick28
Rnd1
KC Concepcion
In the 28th pick they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick31
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
In Round 1, Pick 31 they get a three-down second-level presence. Need was not the driver here.
Pick38
Rnd2
Emmanuel Pregnon
A reach on Emmanuel Pregnon in the 38th overall pick; the board had better options right there. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick39
Rnd2
Caleb Tiernan
Caleb Tiernan at pick No. 39 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick70
Rnd3
Jonah Coleman
A running back of that caliber at the Round 3 slot is the definition of value, full stop. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick95
Rnd3
Trinidad Chambliss
Trinidad Chambliss at slot 95 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick106
Rnd4
Tim Keenan III
They left a pile of value on the table to take Tim Keenan III this early at the Round 4 slot. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick107
Rnd4
Genesis Smith
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 107, where Genesis Smith graded well above the range. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick108
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
D'Angelo Ponds at the 108th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick127
Rnd4
Tanner Koziol
Tanner Koziol at pick 127 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick128
Rnd4
Bryce Lance
Bryce Lance is a better player than the 128th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick133
Rnd4
Bryce Boettcher
A curious use of Round 4, Pick 33. Edge rusher needed the pick; a linebacker in Bryce Boettcher did not.
Pick139
Rnd5
Aaron Graves
Aaron Graves in No. 139 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It fills a real need, too.
Pick144
Rnd5
Bryce Foster
A wild overpay on Bryce Foster in slot 144, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick147
Rnd5
Ted Hurst
By-the-book stuff, Ted Hurst at No. 147 squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick204
Rnd6
Fred Davis II
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Fred Davis II. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick248
Rnd7
Zen Michalski
They talked themselves into Zen Michalski at pick No. 248, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
