Draft Profile: Bio
A three-star recruit out of Eastern Wayne High School in Goldsboro, North Carolina, Barrett had logged 66 tackles and 15 sacks as a junior before the COVID-19 pandemic wiped out his senior football season. He enrolled early at South Carolina in January 2021 and spent his first four years in Columbia buried behind a loaded defensive line that included future NFL picks T.J. Sanders and Tonka Hemingway. Barrett appeared in 39 games across those four seasons but started none, serving primarily as a reserve interior lineman and special teams contributor. He recorded 25 tackles, an interception, and a pair of pass breakups in that span while redshirting as a senior in 2024.

Everything changed in 2025. Barrett earned a starting role and played all 12 games as a fifth-year redshirt senior, piling up 42 tackles, 6.0 tackles for loss, two sacks, and a fumble recovery he returned 17 yards for a touchdown at Texas A&M. His teammates voted him a Rex Enright permanent team captain and co-Steve Wadiak Team MVP, and Phil Steele named him Fourth-Team All-SEC. Barrett received a Combine invite, where he measured 6'3", 312 pounds with 33 3/8" arms.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Broad frame and thick lower half give him a wide base to absorb contact inside
  • Wins leverage battles with consistent pad level and knee bend at the snap
  • Pushes single blockers backward into the backfield with sustained leg drive
  • Holds ground against double teams and keeps his gap sealed at the point of attack
  • Quick eyes against down blocks and pulling linemen; rarely caught off guard
  • Anticipates reach blocks on outside zone, runs his feet to stay square
  • Strong hands at the point of contact with good arm length to control blockers
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Limited first-step quickness off the snap as a pass rusher
  • Pad level rises when rushing the passer, which neutralizes his bull rush
  • Lacks the lateral agility to make plays outside his assigned gap
  • Only one year as a full-time starter across five college seasons
  • Missed tackle rate spiked in his final season despite heavy playing time
  • Offers almost nothing as an interior pass rusher; often subbed out on third down
Scouting Report: Summary
Barrett's value at the next level is straightforward: he is a run-stuffing nose tackle who can eat blocks and keep linebackers clean in a two-gap scheme. His run defense grading was among the strongest in the SEC during his senior year, and the film backs it up. He stacks single blocks with real power, caves down on sealed blocks to collapse run lanes, and holds his spot against combo blocks well enough to stay useful against power and gap schemes. That skill set translates most naturally to an odd-front defense that asks its nose tackle to control two gaps and absorb punishment rather than penetrate.

The concerns are real, though. Barrett is a non-factor as a pass rusher, and his limited athletic profile showed up in combine testing. He lacks the short-area quickness to redirect and finish tackles when runners bounce outside his gap, and his missed tackle numbers in 2025 raise questions about whether he can be trusted on early downs in the NFL without reliable tackling. His 10-yard split and shuttle were passable for his size, but the overall athletic package limits his ceiling.

At his best, Barrett is a 15-to-20 snap rotational nose tackle who gives a defense a stout presence on early downs. He will not rush the passer, and he will not chase plays sideline to sideline. But for a team that needs a big body to clog the A-gaps and keep its linebackers free to run, Barrett can fill that role on a roster. His late breakout and limited starting experience add developmental risk, but the run defense ability is real and translatable.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
