Malik Mustapha, a safety out of Wake Forest, made strides in his collegiate career after a transfer from Richmond. Starting as a team captain in 2023, Mustapha's senior season stats include 80 tackles, five tackles for loss, a half-sack, an interception, two pass breakups, and a forced fumble, securing him a spot on the Second Team All-ACC. Over his tenure at Wake Forest, Mustapha recorded 192 tackles, 15 for loss, four sacks, and three interceptions across 39 games, highlighted by career highs in 2022 with 58 tackles and eight tackles for loss.

Originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, Mustapha's football career began at Ardrey Kell High School, later transferring to Weddington High School to elevate his competitive edge. At Weddington, he helped lead the team to a 16-0 record and a 3A state championship, earning the 2019 Charlotte Defensive Back of the Year and securing first-team All-State and All-Conference honors. His performance in high school and college earned him an invitation to the prestigious 2024 Senior Bowl, showcasing his talent among the nation’s top prospects.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Elite athletic skills -- Made Bruce Feldman's 'Freaks List' at number 59. He wrote: "The 5-10, 205 junior is a 1,300-pound lifter (that includes his bench, squat and clean) and has vertical-jumped 36 1/2 inches this offseason. He also plays really, really fast, having hit 23 MPH on the GPS in a game."
  • Highly physical in run support, routinely disrupts plays, and shows great tackling technique.
  • Exceptional at reading the quarterback's eyes in zone coverage, demonstrating strong football instincts.
  • Compact and muscular, his physique is well-suited for the physical demands of the NFL, particularly in the box.
  • Aggressive playstyle that effectively motivates and energizes his team.
  • Displays good short-area quickness, enabling effective gap penetration and play disruption.
  • Commendable leadership qualities, served as team captain and consistently uplifts team performance.
  • Versatile in defensive positioning, having played both safety spots and nickel, showing adaptability.
  • His coverage skills are amplified by his ability to swiftly close distances and challenge passes.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Limited range and length can affect his effectiveness in man-to-man coverage against taller NFL receivers.
  • Over-aggressive pursuit angles occasionally lead to missed tackles or exploited gaps by opponents.
  • While instinctive, sometimes late to diagnose plays, which could be exploited at the professional level.
  • Can be overly committed on play-action, leaving zones uncovered.
  • Struggles with maintaining ideal contain, particularly against misdirection plays, which may delay his response.
  • After not running at the Combine he ran slower than expected (4.54) at his Pro-Day although he was recovering from a hamstring injury
Scouting Report: Summary
Malik Mustapha's presence on the field is unmistakable, showcasing a hard-hitting, aggressive style that is tailor-made for the physical demands of the NFL. He's proven himself capable of dominating near the line of scrimmage, excelling in run support with an ability to disrupt plays before they develop. His leadership and energy elevate team performance, making him a valuable asset in the locker room and on the field. However, his transition to the NFL will require refinement in coverage skills and decision-making, as his aggressive nature sometimes leads to blown assignments and missed opportunities.

Mustapha's versatility and football IQ allow him to be plugged into various defensive schemes, especially those prioritizing physicality and run support. His capability as a box safety and special teams contributor cannot be overlooked, providing immediate value. While he may not have the ideal range for a deep safety role, his instincts and play recognition can compensate to some extent.

The path ahead for Mustapha is clear: focus on enhancing his coverage techniques and mitigating over-aggression. With proper coaching and scheme fit, he has the potential to evolve into a well-rounded safety who can challenge both the run and pass. All of this makes him a solid mid-round pick with the upside to outperform his draft position.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
