Draft Profile: Bio
Kimani Vidal, a product of Marietta High School in the Atlanta area, started his athletic journey influenced by his father, a former college running back. At Marietta, Vidal excelled as a dual-threat playing both linebacker and running back. His high school career peaked when he led his team to the 2019 7A state championship, their first since 1967, earning MVP honors in the championship game. He finished his senior year with 1,589 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns, contributing 397 receiving yards and five touchdown receptions.
At Troy University, Vidal quickly established himself as a cornerstone of the football program, becoming the all-time career rushing leader with a total of 4,010 yards over four seasons. His college tenure included 781 carries and 33 touchdowns, with his best season coming in 2023, where he amassed 1,661 rushing yards on 297 attempts and scored 14 touchdowns. His senior year efforts earned him a spot as a first-team All-Sun Belt Conference selection and the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year.
Vidal also showed versatility in the passing game, accumulating 700 receiving yards on 92 catches throughout college His performances not only set school records but also solidified his reputation as a reliable workhorse. Vidal's contributions at Troy culminated in an invitation to the 2024 Senior Bowl.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- A compact runner, Vidal has a rare blend of balance, agility and instincts.
- His initial burst is excellent, and he’s capable of running out of a traditional setup or taking the ball lined up next to a quarterback in shotgun.
- He’s a natural pass catcher who can be used on screen and swing passes, and he has the ability to flex out as a matchup chess piece.
- Possesses lateral agility to sidestep defenders and maintain balance, enhancing his elusiveness.
- Strong leg drive and contact balance, allowing him to power through tackles and gain extra yards.
- Shows a potent burst through the line, excelling in quick accelerations that maximize play potential.
- Demonstrates endurance and commitment as a workhorse back, handling a significant share of offensive plays.
- Strong pass protection skills, effectively identifying and neutralizing blitzes.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Often opts prematurely for the perimeter, a habit that might be less effective against faster NFL defenses.
- Limited explosion in lateral cuts, restricting his ability to evade defenders horizontally.
- Exhibits stiffness and limited flexibility, particularly in sharp directional changes.
- Needs to develop a more assertive approach to hitting gaps between the tackles.
Scouting Report: Summary
Kimani Vidal offers a robust skill set that can translate well to the NFL, particularly for teams looking for a back with a consistent motor and the ability to chew up yards after contact. His vision and burst through the gaps make him a reliable option for short-yardage situations, while his capability as a pass-catcher enhances his utility on third downs. Despite his many strengths, Vidal’s lack of elite breakaway speed and tendency to seek the perimeter might limit his effectiveness at the next level.
Vidal’s performance at Troy demonstrates his ability to shoulder a heavy load and his resilience in grinding out tough yards. His skill in navigating through traffic and maintaining balance upon contact will be assets at the professional level. However, his transition to the NFL will require refinement in decision-making, particularly in choosing when to hit the hole versus bouncing outside. If he can adjust his instincts to the quicker pace of the NFL, Vidal has the potential to carve out a role in a multi-back system.
