Draft Profile: Bio
Javontae Jean-Baptiste from Bergen Catholic High School was rated a 4-star recruit by ESPN and handed a 4-star grade by 247 Sports. After high school, Jean-Baptiste joined Ohio State after being heavily recruited.

In 2019 as a freshman Jean-Baptiste saw action in 13 games and played a total of 207 snaps for the Buckeyes. He recorded only 7 tackles, 4 assists, while adding 8 stops. As a pass rusher, he added 6 total pressures, which included 4 QB hurries, no QB hits, and 2 sacks on the season.

As a sophomore for the Buckeyes in 2020 Jean-Baptiste played in 7 games and took part in 158 snaps for the Buckeyes. He recorded only 3 tackles, 2 assists, while adding 4 stops. As a pass rusher, he chalked up 12 total pressures, and 8 QB hurries, 3 QB hits, and one sack during the year.

In 2021 as a junior Jean-Baptiste played in 11 games and contributed on 313 snaps. He recorded 10 tackles, 2 assists while making 8 stops. As a pass rusher, he produced 17 total pressures, which included 10 QB hurries, 5 QB hits, and 2 sacks on the year.

In 2022 as a senior Jean-Baptiste logged playing time in 12 games and logged a total of 241 snaps for the Buckeyes. He also added 12 tackles, one assist, and 9 stops. As a pass rusher, he tallied 14 total pressures, which included 7 QB hurries, 3 QB hits, and 4 sacks on the season.

After season's end Jean-Baptiste transferred to Notre Dame where as a fifth year senior for the Fighting Irish in 2023 Jean-Baptiste played 13 games and took part in 527 snaps for the Fighting Irish. He also added 28 tackles, 13 assists, and 28 stops. As a pass rusher, he tallied 38 total pressures, which included 23 QB hurries, 10 QB hits, and 5 sacks on the season.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Jean-Baptiste has a lethal spin move and the pure speed to close quickly.
  • Possesses accurate snap anticipation and timing to beat blockers off the edge.
  • Plays with leverage at the point of attack whether inside or outside. Keeps eyes in the backfield when inside; moves linemen to either side with strong hands.
  • While Jean-Baptiste has the flexibility to dip and bend under tackles, what makes him truly dangerous is his ability to counter.
  • He explodes off the line of scrimmage, playing with a low pad level and violent hands. Jean-Baptiste converts speed to power effectively enough to put an offensive lineman into the QB’s lap.
  • Looks the part. Possesses a long, athletic build with room for additional muscle mass. Flashes a burst off the snap, good enough to cross the face of collegiate tackles and put him in position to make big plays behind the line of scrimmage.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Because he’s a bit stiff as an athlete, a transition to 3-4 OLB might be a stretch.
  • Lean lower body - must improve core and leg strength. Suspect body flexibility and tight hips.
  • He’s very much a work in progress with his hand in the dirt. Jean-Baptiste doesn’t play with ideal physicality, often failing to set the edge as a run defender.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
