Draft Profile: Bio
Born in Memphis and raised in South Florida, Jalyx Hunt discovered organized sports after his family's relocation to Hagerstown, MD at the age of 9. Hunt quickly showed promise in football and track, also participating in the saxophone. He showcased his athletic versatility early, claiming top positions in track events at Junior Olympics. By high school, Hunt played football primarily as a wide receiver and cornerback, eventually earning All-County honors with 20 receptions for 475 yards and two touchdowns in his senior year at University High School in Orange City, Florida.

Hunt's collegiate journey began at Cornell as a safety, where he played from 2019 to 2021, recording a total of 29 tackles and a blocked punt across 17 games. In 2022, he transferred to Houston Christian, shifting to a hybrid outside linebacker role which elevated his performance. In two seasons, Hunt accumulated 133 tackles, 20.5 tackles for loss, 13.5 sacks, and demonstrated his playmaking ability with multiple forced fumbles and a 52-yard fumble return touchdown. His performance earned him the Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2023.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Impressive overall athletic ability - really shone at the the Combine where he was in the 90th plus percentile in both the broad jump and the vertical
  • Excellent frame and long arms, leveraged well in pass-rushing, with a natural instinct despite newness to the edge position.
  • Demonstrates explosive burst off the line and high arc acceleration, threatening from multiple angles.
  • Utilizes his prior defensive back experience to anticipate plays and shows prowess in zone coverage and run defense.
  • Combines impressive closing speed and flexibility, enabling effective pursuit and engagement with quarterbacks and runners alike.
  • Adaptable and quick to learn, shown by a successful transition from safety to EDGE and immediate impact on field performance.
  • Good character and leadership, known as a positive locker room influence, aligning with NFL team culture.
  • Shows promise in special teams play, suggesting utility and versatility in professional setups.
  • Decent hand usage to keep blockers at bay, important for shedding blocks and controlling engagement points.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Lacks consistency in pass-rush move execution and requires development in rush technique and arsenal variety.
  • Needs to improve strength to effectively convert speed to power and hold his ground against runs.
  • At times reactive rather than proactive, shown by delayed responses to snaps and play developments.
  • Can play too upright, reducing effectiveness in leveraging his physical traits fully during rushes.
  • Despite excellent athletic ability, faces challenges in maintaining discipline and effectiveness against more sophisticated offensive schemes.
Scouting Report: Summary
Jalyx Hunt enters the NFL Draft as an intriguing developmental prospect with a high ceiling. Despite his limited experience at the edge position, Hunt's athletic profile is undeniable. He demonstrates explosive burst and length. The unusual position change from safety to EDGE has allowed him to show off his adaptability and physical tools, and ability to disrupt plays behind the line of scrimmage. However, Hunt's technique as a pass rusher is still unrefined, and he will need considerable coaching to harness his physical traits effectively on the field.

While Hunt's upside is evident in his speed and versatility, his play against the run is a concern. He struggles to maintain leverage and can be moved off his spot by bigger and technically sound players. His pass-rush arsenal is also underdeveloped, often relying on his athletic ability rather than skill to beat blockers.

Overall, Hunt's draft stock as a mid-to-late-round pick reflects his status as a project with a lot of upside. His background in special teams and his knack for making plays could see him making an immediate impact while he develops as an edge defender. With the right developmental path, Hunt could transform from a raw prospect into a reliable pass rush specialist on an NFL roster.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
