Draft Profile: Bio
A journey that began in the mountains of Salt Lake City has led Jackson Hawes to the precipice of NFL dreams through an unconventional path. The former Highland High School two-sport standout carved out his initial collegiate legacy at Yale, where he evolved from a reserve tight end in 2019 to a two-time Second-Team All-Ivy League performer. After the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, Hawes steadily built his resume over three seasons with the Bulldogs, collecting 35 receptions for 371 yards and six touchdowns.

The decision to transfer to Georgia Tech for his final year of eligibility proved transformative for the 6'4", 241-pound tight end. In the ACC pressure cooker, Hawes elevated his game against superior competition, particularly as a devastating blocker in the run game. While his receiving numbers remained modest with 16 catches for 195 yards, his impact in the trenches and versatility in multiple formations caught the eye of Senior Bowl evaluators, earning him a coveted invitation to Mobile.

His senior season highlight came against Louisville, where despite nursing an ankle injury, Hawes showcased his grit with a crucial 41-yard reception in the two-minute drill.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Devastating drive blocker who consistently creates movement at the point of attack - routinely pancaked defensive ends and linebackers in ACC play
  • Displays exceptional technique and leverage as a lead blocker, particularly effective on counter and power runs from H-back alignment
  • Shows savvy understanding of blocking angles and timing, consistently sealing the edge to spring outside runs for extra yardage
  • Reliable hands in short and intermediate areas - catches away from his body and secures through contact despite limited targets
  • Versatile chess piece who lined up in-line, H-back, slot, and even took snaps as a traditional fullback in short-yardage situations
  • Nasty finisher who plays through the whistle and seeks to bury defenders - showed same intensity whether blocking inline or in space
  • Strong anchor in pass protection - displays proper technique and core strength to stonewall edge rushers in max protection schemes
  • Good recognition of stunts and blitzes - consistently picked up late rushers and helped shore up protection
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Limited separation ability against man coverage - lacks the explosive traits to consistently create space against NFL defensive backs
  • Route tree needs expansion - majority of routes were simple flat and curl patterns without sophisticated breaks or stems
  • Can get overaggressive as a blocker, occasionally lunging and losing balance against quicker defensive ends in space
  • Despite solid testing numbers, play speed appears average - takes time building momentum after catch and rarely threatens vertically
  • Age and limited production against top competition raise questions about ultimate ceiling - will be 24-year-old rookie
Scouting Report: Summary
NFL scouts searching for the next George Kittle won't find their man in Hawes, but teams emphasizing a physical run game will discover a late round gem who can contribute immediately in specific packages. His ability to line up across multiple positions while maintaining blocking effectiveness gives offensive coordinators valuable formation flexibility.

Hawes projects as a TE2 or TE3 who can play 15-20 snaps per game in heavy personnel groupings while contributing on special teams. His best fit comes with a team that emphasizes gap-scheme runs and utilizes multiple tight end sets - think Tennessee Titans or Cleveland Browns. While he may never develop into a consistent receiving threat, his ability to create movement in the run game and pass protect in a pinch gives him staying power as a valuable role player.

In a league that increasingly values versatility, Hawes represents a throwback to the blue-collar tight ends of previous eras. His frame, functional strength, and nasty demeanor as a blocker should earn him a roster spot by year's end.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
