The 49ers kept it disciplined and banked a B-. The 49ers spent real capital to be 29 picks early on Dylan Fairchild, and the board is going to hold them to it.
The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. That Harmon pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.
The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Will Johnson
In No. 11 they get a potential shutdown corner. Need was not the driver here.
Pick43
Rnd2
Derrick Harmon
A quiet steal in Round 2, Pick 11: Derrick Harmon for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick75
Rnd3
Dylan Fairchild
Dylan Fairchild in the 75th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick100
Rnd3
Cam Skattebo
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cam Skattebo. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick101
Rnd3
Jared Wilson
Jared Wilson at slot 101 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick113
Rnd4
Oluwafemi Oladejo
Oluwafemi Oladejo at pick 113 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick138
Rnd4
Aeneas Peebles
Aeneas Peebles in Round 4, Pick 36 is fair value, right on his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick147
Rnd5
Logan Brown
By-the-book stuff, Logan Brown at slot 147 squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick160
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Dont'e Thornton Jr.. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick227
Rnd7
Teddye Buchanan
This one needs a full-page explanation: Teddye Buchanan in the Round 7 slot, miles early. The roster fit checks out.
Pick249
Rnd7
Ty Hamilton
No edge and no loss on Ty Hamilton in the 249th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick252
Rnd7
Tonka Hemingway
A straight-up fair deal on Tonka Hemingway at the 252nd pick, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
