Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueC+ NeedB+ TradesA FutureB-
More right than wrong for the 49ers, and a B to prove it.

The 49ers went off the board in a big way for Jared Ivey, 26 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. Good, not great, and the B says as much.

Landing Lachey that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss. They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick11 Rnd1 Josh Simmons
In No. 11 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick53 Rnd2 Jared Ivey
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jared Ivey well ahead of where he belonged. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick75 Rnd3 Darien Porter
They paid sticker price for Darien Porter in the 75th pick, and that is fine. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick84 Rnd3 Donovan Jackson
Donovan Jackson in Round 3, Pick 20 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick100 Rnd3 Darius Alexander
A reasonable price with a little left over, Darius Alexander in pick No. 100. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick113 Rnd4 Jaylin Lane
Jaylin Lane at the Round 4 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick138 Rnd4 Brashard Smith
Brashard Smith in Round 4, Pick 36 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick147 Rnd5 Mitchell Evans
A straight-up fair deal on Mitchell Evans at No. 147, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick171 Rnd5 Seth McLaughlin
They did well to land Seth McLaughlin in pick No. 171, just ahead of his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick211 Rnd6 Jay Higgins
Jay Higgins at pick 211 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The roster fit checks out.
Pick227 Rnd7 Luke Lachey
They barely believed it either: Luke Lachey still on the board at slot 227. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick249 Rnd7 Zeek Biggers
Zeek Biggers in the Round 7 slot is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick252 Rnd7 Ty Hamilton
Ty Hamilton in the 252nd pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
