FutureB-
The 49ers let Skattebo fall into their laps, and walked away with a B. Somebody in pick 138 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The 49ers sat still while Cam Skattebo, the No. 99 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made. If Joyner pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Will Johnson
In No. 12 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. More want than need.
Pick43
Rnd2
Jalon Walker
Steal is underselling it; Jalon Walker at Round 2, Pick 11 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The roster fit checks out.
Pick75
Rnd3
Harold Fannin Jr.
Somehow Harold Fannin Jr. was still sitting there in pick 75, and they pounced on premier tight end value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick76
Rnd3
Ozzy Trapilo
Ozzy Trapilo at the 76th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick100
Rnd3
Deone Walker
They let Deone Walker come to them and pounced at slot 100. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick113
Rnd4
Kevin Winston Jr.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Kevin Winston Jr. in the 113th pick, plain and simple. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick138
Rnd4
Cam Skattebo
Circle this one: Cam Skattebo at pick No. 138 is a fall that decides a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick147
Rnd5
Jah Joyner
They liked Jah Joyner enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 5 slot. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick149
Rnd5
Tyler Shough
Value with a capital V on Tyler Shough in Round 5, Pick 11, a genuine coup. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick160
Rnd5
Seth McLaughlin
Seth McLaughlin in the Round 5 slot is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick204
Rnd6
Addison West
No edge and no loss on Addison West in pick No. 204; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick227
Rnd7
Kobe Hudson
Kobe Hudson at the 227th overall pick is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick249
Rnd7
Ty Hamilton
Ty Hamilton in No. 249 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick252
Rnd7
Cody Lindenberg
They took Cody Lindenberg at par in the 252nd pick, which is nothing to complain about. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
