Draft Grade — Bears
Overall A-
ValueB NeedB+ TradesA+ FutureB+
The Bears robbed the room for Paul Jr.. Final grade: A-.

You build a draft on nights like this. Chris Paul Jr. had no business being available in Round 7, Pick 30, and the Bears did the only sane thing and turned in the card. One of the weekend's best, top to bottom, and a A- to show for it.

They will need McLaughlin to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

The Bears paired the rookies with proven help, Jonathan Mingo leading the way.

It is a haul that will look even better come September.

Pick Analysis
Pick12 Rnd1 Walter Nolen
In Round 1, Pick 12 they get a disruptive interior force at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick41 Rnd2 Landon Jackson
A slide stopped in pick No. 41, with Landon Jackson worth more than the price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick44 Rnd2 Tyler Booker
A reasonable price with a little left over, Tyler Booker in the 44th pick. The roster fit checks out.
Pick73 Rnd3 JT Tuimoloau
They let JT Tuimoloau come to them and pounced at No. 73. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick147 Rnd5 Jake Majors
Circle this one: Jake Majors at the Round 5 slot is a fall that decides a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick150 Rnd5 Lathan Ransom
They will replay Lathan Ransom at slot 150 for years; that is how good the value is. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick169 Rnd5 Smael Mondon Jr.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Smael Mondon Jr. in the 169th overall pick, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick170 Rnd5 Bryce Foster
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Bryce Foster well ahead of where he belonged. It fills a real need, too.
Pick171 Rnd5 Seth McLaughlin
Seth McLaughlin in the Round 5 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick203 Rnd6 Kalel Mullings
Taking Kalel Mullings in Round 6, Pick 28 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick209 Rnd6 Billy Bowman Jr.
Billy Bowman Jr. at No. 209 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick226 Rnd7 Luke Lachey
Luke Lachey at the 226th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick244 Rnd7 Chris Paul Jr.
Somehow Chris Paul Jr. was still sitting there in pick 244, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A need, and now a little less of one.
