The phones sank the Steelers this weekend: D. The Steelers put a flag in the ground for Donovan Smith, 39 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Collins at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Tyler Warren
In pick 30 they get a red-zone target to build around, and a steal at that.
Pick36
Rnd2
Kenneth Grant
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Kenneth Grant at pick No. 36. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick45
Rnd2
Emeka Egbuka
They read the board right and Emeka Egbuka was the payoff at the 45th overall pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick46
Rnd2
Omarion Hampton
Nice patience on Omarion Hampton, who had no business lasting to Round 2, Pick 14. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick83
Rnd3
Alfred Collins
They barely believed it either: Alfred Collins still on the board at No. 83. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick109
Rnd4
Tyler Shough
Tyler Shough in slot 109 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick117
Rnd4
Lathan Ransom
The board had Lathan Ransom higher than pick No. 117, and the safety fell to them anyway. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick123
Rnd4
Cobee Bryant
No edge and no loss on Cobee Bryant in slot 123; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick156
Rnd5
Ty Robinson
They liked Ty Robinson enough to skip the value, taking him in the 156th pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick185
Rnd6
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Good price on Dont'e Thornton Jr. in Round 6, Pick 9, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It fills a real need, too.
Pick229
Rnd7
Donovan Smith
They left a pile of value on the table to take Donovan Smith this early at No. 229. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
