FutureB
The Steelers cashed the board's mistake on McCaffrey: B+. Give the war room a raise for the dealing alone. The Steelers came out ahead on every exchange that mattered, and it was not close. The bottom line is a respectable B+.
Getting McCaffrey where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The Jones pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman, edge rusher and other spots still on the board. If Bertrand pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick32
Rnd1
Kool-Aid McKinstry
In slot 32 they get a potential shutdown corner at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick51
Rnd2
Tyler Nubin
They read the board right and Tyler Nubin was the payoff at the 51st overall pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick62
Rnd2
Cade Stover
A reach for Cade Stover in Round 2, Pick 30; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick84
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
A reach on Brenden Rice in No. 84; the board had better options right there. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick98
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
Christian Mahogany at pick No. 98 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick136
Rnd4
Christian Jones
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Christian Jones adds an offensive lineman and leaves interior defensive lineman, edge rusher and other spots untouched.
Pick178
Rnd6
Luke McCaffrey
Luke McCaffrey in the Round 6 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick195
Rnd6
JD Bertrand
They talked themselves into JD Bertrand at slot 195, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
Pick252
Rnd7
Sam Hartman
Sam Hartman in the 252nd overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
