Fitzgerald should have been long gone. The Bears pounced, and earned a B+. Thirty-one other rooms let Ryan Fitzgerald slide, and the Bears were the ones holding the card at the Round 7 slot. Highway robbery.
The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Reaching for Wilson left real value on the table behind him.
Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Mykel Williams
In slot 24 they get a disruptor off the edge, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick39
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tyler Booker. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick41
Rnd2
Omarion Hampton
A tidy bit of business in the Round 2 slot, where Omarion Hampton graded well above the range. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick72
Rnd3
Jihaad Campbell
A linebacker of that caliber at No. 72 is the definition of value, full stop. It fills a real need, too.
Pick97
Rnd3
Jared Wilson
Jared Wilson at the 97th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick140
Rnd5
Elijah Arroyo
Taking Elijah Arroyo in Round 5, Pick 1 is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick149
Rnd5
Dylan Sampson
Steal is underselling it; Dylan Sampson at the 149th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick197
Rnd6
Nick Nash
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Nick Nash in pick No. 197, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
Pick235
Rnd7
Ryan Fitzgerald
Ryan Fitzgerald at No. 235 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick242
Rnd7
Hunter Wohler
The board had cheaper options than Hunter Wohler at pick No. 242, and it noticed. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
