Mondon Jr. should have been long gone. The Steelers pounced, and earned a B-.

The Steelers spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Smael Mondon Jr., the No. 100 name on the board, in pick No. 161.

Every board in the league had McCord lower, and that gap is the story. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. They left with quarterback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick21 Rnd1 Emeka Egbuka
In the 21st overall pick they get a matchup problem out wide. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick52 Rnd2 Kyle McCord
A big swing on Kyle McCord at No. 52, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick83 Rnd3 Dylan Sampson
Dylan Sampson in pick 83 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick121 Rnd4 Malachi Moore
Malachi Moore at the Round 4 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick161 Rnd5 Smael Mondon Jr.
They barely believed it either: Smael Mondon Jr. still on the board at Round 5, Pick 24. It fills a real need, too.
Pick223 Rnd7 Garrett Dellinger
Value said wait; Garrett Dellinger in the 223rd pick says they were not listening. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick229 Rnd7 Jack Kiser
Taking Jack Kiser in pick No. 229 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick245 Rnd7 Giles Jackson
They reached a country mile for Giles Jackson at slot 245, and the board is aghast. A need, and now a little less of one.
