Draft Grade — Browns
Overall
B+
ValueC-
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureA+
Nobody dealt better than the Browns this weekend: B+. The Browns put a flag in the ground for Jay Toia, 158 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. The bottom line is a respectable B+.
They banked enough surplus on Mondon Jr. to cover a lot of smaller sins. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They punted on safety, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The Browns paired the rookies with proven help, Tyler Smith leading the way.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the safety spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Shemar Stewart
In the Round 1 slot they get a double-digit-sack hope, even if it was a touch early. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick33
Rnd2
JT Tuimoloau
The board had cheaper options than JT Tuimoloau at pick 33, and it noticed. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick45
Rnd2
TreVeyon Henderson
A conviction pick on TreVeyon Henderson at the 45th pick that the board grades a round light. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick65
Rnd3
Jalen Milroe
A big swing on Jalen Milroe at the 65th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick67
Rnd3
Jayden Higgins
Jayden Higgins at No. 67 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick94
Rnd3
Barrett Carter
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Barrett Carter at slot 94. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick103
Rnd4
Oronde Gadsden II
Oronde Gadsden II at the Round 4 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The roster fit checks out.
Pick116
Rnd4
Shemar Turner
A premium they did not need to pay, Shemar Turner a notch or two before his time. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick152
Rnd5
Kurtis Rourke
Nice patience on Kurtis Rourke, who had no business lasting to Round 5, Pick 13. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick155
Rnd5
Jaylin Smith
They talked themselves into Jaylin Smith at pick No. 155, and the board did not agree. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick165
Rnd5
Smael Mondon Jr.
They robbed the room for Smael Mondon Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick181
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
This one needs a full-page explanation: Trey Zuhn III in slot 181, miles early. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick194
Rnd6
Raheim Sanders
They will replay Raheim Sanders at the 194th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick202
Rnd6
Cobee Bryant
Cobee Bryant slipping to the 202nd pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick216
Rnd6
Moliki Matavao
Moliki Matavao in pick 216 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick217
Rnd6
Jay Toia
They reached into another round for Jay Toia, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick234
Rnd7
Reuben Fatheree II
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Reuben Fatheree II. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick257
Rnd7
Gino Garcia
Value said wait; Gino Garcia in No. 257 says they were not listening. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
