McMillan should have been long gone. The Bears pounced, and earned a A-. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Bears were there to profit. Tetairoa McMillan, the No. 5 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 39th overall pick. This is how you run a draft, and the A- reflects it.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. A whole weekend of picks and cornerback is somehow still a want. They are betting Sawyer proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
Add it up and this is about as clean as a draft weekend gets.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Jack Sawyer
In the Round 1 slot they get a bendy edge with upside, even if it was a touch early. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick7
Rnd1
Josh Simmons
In pick 7 they get a long-term starter on the line, reach and all.
Pick10
Rnd1
Princely Umanmielen
In the 10th pick they get a disruptor off the edge at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick22
Rnd1
Mykel Williams
No drama and no debate, Mykel Williams went about where he belonged in Round 1, Pick 22. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick33
Rnd2
Tate Ratledge
They paid sticker price for Tate Ratledge in the 33rd overall pick, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick37
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
Tyler Booker in pick No. 37 is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick39
Rnd2
Tetairoa McMillan
They barely believed it either: Tetairoa McMillan still on the board at No. 39. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick41
Rnd2
Mike Green
Mike Green at slot 41 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the edge rusher. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick42
Rnd2
Kaleb Johnson
Fair-plus on Kaleb Johnson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick44
Rnd2
Xavier Watts
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Watts at the 44th pick, value and slot in agreement. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick55
Rnd2
Deone Walker
The board had cheaper options than Deone Walker at Round 2, Pick 23, and it noticed. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
