Draft Grade — Saints
Overall D
ValueB- NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The Saints got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The Saints took Barryn Sorrell a full 167 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. Put together, it is a D.

The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The King steal is the beam this whole class leans on.

They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.

Pick Analysis
Pick9 Rnd1 Ashton Jeanty
In the 9th overall pick they get a workhorse for the backfield. A real need, handled.
Pick40 Rnd2 Walter Nolen
You do not let an interior defensive lineman like Walter Nolen reach the 40th pick and blink. They did not. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick71 Rnd3 Antwaun Powell-Ryland
Antwaun Powell-Ryland at pick 71 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick81 Rnd3 Ozzy Trapilo
A conviction pick on Ozzy Trapilo at the Round 3 slot that the board grades a round light. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick83 Rnd3 Deone Walker
Deone Walker slid further than he should have, and Round 3, Pick 19 is lovely value for the interior defensive lineman. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick93 Rnd3 Cam Skattebo
They paid up for Cam Skattebo at No. 93 when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick110 Rnd4 Jaylin Noel
A tidy bit of business in Round 4, Pick 9, where Jaylin Noel graded well above the range. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick113 Rnd4 Mason Taylor
Mason Taylor at the 113th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick114 Rnd4 Luke Kandra
By-the-book stuff, Luke Kandra at the 114th pick squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick120 Rnd4 Cody Simon
Cody Simon at No. 120 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick125 Rnd4 Mello Dotson
Mello Dotson in pick No. 125 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick129 Rnd4 Barryn Sorrell
A wild overpay on Barryn Sorrell in the Round 4 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick182 Rnd6 Kobe King
They robbed the room for Kobe King here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick189 Rnd6 Theo Wease Jr.
Theo Wease Jr. at slot 189 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick251 Rnd7 Maxen Hook
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Maxen Hook in slot 251. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick254 Rnd7 Seth McLaughlin
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the 254th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
