y DRAFTING FOR THEChiefs
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Chiefs
Overall
B-
ValueC
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Chiefs finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a B-. The Chiefs spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Troy Fautanu, the No. 116 name on the board, in the Round 5 slot. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
Everything downstream of J.J. McCarthy depends on J.J. McCarthy, and the building knows it. The Marshall Jr. reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. A whole weekend of picks and running back is somehow still a want.
On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
J.J. McCarthy in pick No. 31 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick63
Rnd2
Jason Marshall Jr.
They reached a country mile for Jason Marshall Jr. at slot 63, and the board is aghast. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick94
Rnd3
AJ Barner
They talked themselves into AJ Barner at the 94th overall pick, and the board did not agree. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick131
Rnd4
Jalen McMillan
They robbed the room for Jalen McMillan here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick163
Rnd5
KJ Jefferson
Taking KJ Jefferson in Round 5, Pick 27 is close to grand larceny; a quarterback that good had no business lasting this long. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick171
Rnd5
Keith Randolph Jr.
Keith Randolph Jr. at No. 171 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick175
Rnd5
Troy Fautanu
Troy Fautanu at the 175th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick209
Rnd6
Jason Henderson
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jason Henderson this early at pick No. 209. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick252
Rnd7
Mario Williams
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Mario Williams in slot 252, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
