Draft Grade — Cowboys

TradesB-
FutureB-
Brooks should have been long gone. The Cowboys pounced, and earned a B-. When a board-topper like Tahj Brooks slides to slot 172, you do not overthink it, and the Cowboys did not. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
The Hairston pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Mike Green
In No. 12 they get a double-digit-sack hope, though they paid up to get him. Need was not the driver here.
Pick44
Rnd2
Maxwell Hairston
They reached into another round for Maxwell Hairston, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick76
Rnd3
Barrett Carter
No edge and no loss on Barrett Carter in Round 3, Pick 12; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick150
Rnd5
Jeffrey Bassa
Jeffrey Bassa in the 150th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick172
Rnd5
Tahj Brooks
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Tahj Brooks in slot 172, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick174
Rnd5
Nick Nash
A wide receiver of that caliber at the Round 5 slot is the definition of value, full stop. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick190
Rnd6
Earnest Greene III
Circle this one: Earnest Greene III at the 190th pick is a fall that decides a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick194
Rnd6
Hayden Conner
A big swing on Hayden Conner at pick No. 194, well ahead of any board in the building. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick202
Rnd6
Trey Zuhn III
Trey Zuhn III in the 202nd pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick211
Rnd6
RJ Harvey
RJ Harvey in slot 211 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick249
Rnd7
Brady Cook
Value said wait; Brady Cook in No. 249 says they were not listening. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
