Derrick DRAFTING FOR THECowboys

FutureB-
Nothing loud, just a tidy B for the Cowboys. If confidence were a draft strategy, the Cowboys would have aced it. Mello Dotson at No. 89 is 51 spots clear of where he belonged.
Getting Reid where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end. They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Ashton Jeanty
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Ashton Jeanty at Round 1, Pick 12. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick58
Rnd2
Aireontae Ersery
They read the board right and Aireontae Ersery was the payoff at the 58th pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick76
Rnd3
Tyler Baron
A straight-up fair deal on Tyler Baron at the 76th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick89
Rnd3
Mello Dotson
Mello Dotson in the Round 3 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick127
Rnd4
Cody Simon
Cody Simon at No. 127 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick150
Rnd5
Pat Bryant
Pat Bryant at slot 150 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick167
Rnd5
Raheim Sanders
A slide stopped in pick 167, with Raheim Sanders worth more than the price. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick170
Rnd5
Nick Nash
They let Nick Nash come to them and pounced at the Round 5 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick172
Rnd5
Tyler Cooper
They paid sticker price for Tyler Cooper in slot 172, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick174
Rnd5
Ty Robinson
They did well to land Ty Robinson in pick No. 174, just ahead of his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick190
Rnd6
Dorian Strong
A tidy bit of business in Round 6, Pick 12, where Dorian Strong graded well above the range. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick211
Rnd6
Karene Reid
Karene Reid is a better player than No. 211 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick249
Rnd7
Kevin Jennings
This one needs a full-page explanation: Kevin Jennings in the 249th pick, miles early. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
