Quarterback settled, McCarthy in the fold, and a D- for the Giants. The Garrett Nelson pick is the one that will follow the Giants into the fall. They took him 69 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They have staked the next five years on J.J. McCarthy, which is the only story that really matters here.
The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The King steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and running back is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick6
Rnd1
Joe Alt
In pick 6 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick25
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a long-term answer under center, a steep price for the projection. A real need, handled.
Pick39
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
T'Vondre Sweat at the Round 2 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick47
Rnd2
Jackson Powers-Johnson
Jackson Powers-Johnson in pick No. 47 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick57
Rnd2
Kalen King
Kalen King in No. 57 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The roster fit checks out.
Pick70
Rnd3
Payton Wilson
Payton Wilson at slot 70 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick108
Rnd4
Tykee Smith
Tykee Smith at the 108th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick140
Rnd5
Luke McCaffrey
No drama and no debate, Luke McCaffrey went about where he belonged in the 140th pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick168
Rnd5
Brennan Jackson
A straight-up fair deal on Brennan Jackson at the Round 5 slot, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick185
Rnd6
Javon Baker
A reasonable price with a little left over, Javon Baker in pick No. 185. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick251
Rnd7
Devin Leary
A conviction pick on Devin Leary at slot 251 that the board grades a round light. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick252
Rnd7
Garrett Nelson
Garrett Nelson at Round 7, Pick 32 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
