FutureB-
A costly weekend of dealing drags the 49ers to a D-. The Drew Kendall pick is the one that will follow the 49ers into the fall. They took him 42 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. A D- that will need time and luck to look better.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. On value alone, Emmanwori makes the weekend a net positive.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
James Pearce Jr.
In pick 12 they get a problem off the edge at fair value.
Pick43
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
Nick Emmanwori in pick No. 43 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick44
Rnd2
Kenneth Grant
The board fumbled Kenneth Grant all the way to the 44th pick, and they scooped it up. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick75
Rnd3
Dylan Fairchild
A wild overpay on Dylan Fairchild in slot 75, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick76
Rnd3
Anthony Belton
Anthony Belton at No. 76 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick100
Rnd3
Savion Williams
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Savion Williams at the Round 3 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick113
Rnd4
Oluwafemi Oladejo
Oluwafemi Oladejo at slot 113 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick138
Rnd4
Damien Martinez
They liked Damien Martinez enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 138. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick147
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
They reached a country mile for Dont'e Thornton Jr. at the 147th overall pick, and the board is aghast. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick160
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
A swing that ignored the value entirely, JJ Pegues well ahead of where he belonged. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick174
Rnd5
Oronde Gadsden II
They reached into another round for Oronde Gadsden II, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick227
Rnd7
Jabbar Muhammad
A conviction pick on Jabbar Muhammad at pick 227 that the board grades a round light. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick249
Rnd7
Teddye Buchanan
Teddye Buchanan in No. 249 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
Pick252
Rnd7
Drew Kendall
Drew Kendall at Round 7, Pick 36 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
