Smith-Wade should have been long gone. The Panthers pounced, and earned a D. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Panthers did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
They will regret leaving linebacker for another day if the season turns on it. The Smith-Wade pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In pick 12 they get a true top target. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick65
Rnd3
Adisa Isaac
No edge and no loss on Adisa Isaac in the 65th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick76
Rnd3
Cooper Beebe
A straight-up fair deal on Cooper Beebe at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick101
Rnd4
Audric Estime
Audric Estime at the 101st pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. It fills a real need, too.
Pick180
Rnd6
Chau Smith-Wade
Chau Smith-Wade in No. 180 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick222
Rnd7
Stefon Thompson
Stefon Thompson at Round 7, Pick 2 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
