Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B
ValueB NeedB+ TradesA+ FutureC
The Patriots let Simon fall into their laps, and walked away with a B.

The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Patriots watched Cody Simon slide 98 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.

They will need Griffith to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.

Pick Analysis
Pick12 Rnd1 Jack Sawyer
In Round 1, Pick 12 they get a premier pass rusher, though they paid up to get him. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick28 Rnd1 Nick Emmanwori
In pick 28 they get a ballhawk on the back end at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick38 Rnd2 Aireontae Ersery
A reach on Aireontae Ersery in slot 38; the board had better options right there. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick44 Rnd2 Omarion Hampton
Omarion Hampton in pick No. 44 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick69 Rnd3 Deone Walker
Deone Walker in No. 69 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick76 Rnd3 Jihaad Campbell
They barely believed it either: Jihaad Campbell still on the board at the Round 3 slot. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick125 Rnd4 Kevin Winston Jr.
They will replay Kevin Winston Jr. at the 125th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick131 Rnd4 Dorian Strong
A real head-scratcher, Dorian Strong in the 131st pick is miles ahead of his ranking. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick148 Rnd5 Oronde Gadsden II
Oronde Gadsden II at the Round 5 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick194 Rnd6 Seth McLaughlin
Seth McLaughlin in No. 194 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick217 Rnd7 Nick Nash
They reached a country mile for Nick Nash at slot 217, and the board is aghast. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick220 Rnd7 Cody Simon
Circle this one: Cody Simon at the 220th pick is a fall that decides a draft. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick238 Rnd7 Thor Griffith
A big swing on Thor Griffith at pick 238, well ahead of any board in the building. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
