Draft Grade — 49ers

FutureB+
Nobody dealt better than the 49ers this weekend: B+. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The 49ers reached some 71 spots for Jackson Slater, and value like that does not grow back.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. Landing Moore that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Grey Zabel
In pick No. 23 they get a long-term starter on the line, even if it was a touch early. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick29
Rnd1
Walter Nolen
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the defensive front, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick43
Rnd2
JT Tuimoloau
JT Tuimoloau at No. 43 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
Pick75
Rnd3
Jackson Slater
They talked themselves into Jackson Slater at slot 75, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick100
Rnd3
Cam Skattebo
By-the-book stuff, Cam Skattebo at Round 3, Pick 36 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick113
Rnd4
Tez Johnson
Nice patience on Tez Johnson, who had no business lasting to the 113th pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick138
Rnd4
Jake Majors
Jake Majors at the 138th overall pick is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick147
Rnd5
Mello Dotson
A quiet steal in the Round 5 slot: Mello Dotson for less than the market said. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick159
Rnd5
Malachi Moore
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Malachi Moore in the 159th pick, plain and simple. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick160
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
A big swing on JJ Pegues at pick 160, well ahead of any board in the building. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick227
Rnd7
Teddye Buchanan
A wild overpay on Teddye Buchanan in Round 7, Pick 11, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick249
Rnd7
Amari Kight
Amari Kight at No. 249 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick252
Rnd7
Shaun Dolac
They left a pile of value on the table to take Shaun Dolac this early at slot 252. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
