Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueB NeedB TradesA FutureB-
Good, not great, for the 49ers: B.

This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Dillon Gabriel, the No. 123 name on the board, stolen at the Round 5 slot. The bottom line is a respectable B.

Reaching for West left real value on the table behind him. Job largely done: offensive lineman settled and 8 of 8 of the wish list covered.

The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss. Value over need was the throughline, for better and worse.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick43 Rnd2 Jihaad Campbell
Nothing to complain about; Jihaad Campbell went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick55 Rnd2 Tre Harris
Tre Harris at No. 55 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick58 Rnd2 Alfred Collins
Alfred Collins in slot 58 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick61 Rnd2 Harold Fannin Jr.
Harold Fannin Jr. in pick 61 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick73 Rnd3 Donovan Jackson
Nice patience on Donovan Jackson, who had no business lasting to the 73rd overall pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick75 Rnd3 Ashton Gillotte
They talked themselves into Ashton Gillotte at pick No. 75, and the board did not agree. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick79 Rnd3 TreVeyon Henderson
Steal is underselling it; TreVeyon Henderson at No. 79 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick81 Rnd3 Andrew Mukuba
Andrew Mukuba at the Round 3 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick100 Rnd3 Jacob Parrish
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jacob Parrish. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick138 Rnd4 Jake Majors
They let Jake Majors come to them and pounced at Round 4, Pick 36. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick147 Rnd5 Nohl Williams
The board fumbled Nohl Williams all the way to Round 5, Pick 9, and they scooped it up. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick150 Rnd5 CJ West
A real head-scratcher, CJ West in slot 150 is miles ahead of his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick155 Rnd5 Dillon Gabriel
They robbed the room for Dillon Gabriel here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick160 Rnd5 Jonas Sanker
You do not let a safety like Jonas Sanker reach pick No. 160 and blink. They did not. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick162 Rnd5 O'Donnell Fortune
Value with a capital V on O'Donnell Fortune in the Round 5 slot, a genuine coup. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick197 Rnd6 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
They read the board right and Dont'e Thornton Jr. was the payoff at No. 197. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick227 Rnd7 Jackson Hawes
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jackson Hawes this early at pick 227. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick241 Rnd7 Ty Hamilton
Ty Hamilton at the 241st pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick249 Rnd7 Teddye Buchanan
No edge and no loss on Teddye Buchanan in Round 7, Pick 33; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster fit checks out.
Pick252 Rnd7 Phil Mafah
Taking Phil Mafah in the 252nd pick is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
