Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall A-
ValueB NeedB TradesA FutureA
The 49ers cashed the board's mistake on Johnson: A-.

Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the 49ers were there to profit. Kaleb Johnson, the No. 47 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick 67. It holds up to a second look, which is why it earns the A-.

The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Walker pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The trade work was a quiet net positive.

The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.

Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Jalon Walker and all.

Pick Analysis
Pick33 Rnd2 Jalon Walker
They read the board right and Jalon Walker was the payoff at pick 33. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick43 Rnd2 Tyler Booker
A tidy little value on Tyler Booker in slot 43, a step better than break-even. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick67 Rnd3 Kaleb Johnson
They robbed the room for Kaleb Johnson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick75 Rnd3 Carson Schwesinger
Carson Schwesinger at the 75th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. The roster fit checks out.
Pick76 Rnd3 Deone Walker
Deone Walker in pick No. 76 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick100 Rnd3 Andrew Mukuba
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Andrew Mukuba at the Round 3 slot. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick113 Rnd4 Zy Alexander
A slide stopped in No. 113, with Zy Alexander worth more than the price. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick138 Rnd4 Jake Majors
Jake Majors at the 138th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick147 Rnd5 Pat Bryant
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Pat Bryant. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick149 Rnd5 Tyler Baron
Tyler Baron at pick 149 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick160 Rnd5 Seth McLaughlin
They took Seth McLaughlin at par in No. 160, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
