Grand theft in the 71st pick: the Bears steal Johnson and grade out a B+. This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Kaleb Johnson, the No. 39 name on the board, stolen at the 71st pick.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. The cost of the Majors reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick13
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
In slot 13 they get a problem off the edge at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick37
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
They paid sticker price for Tyler Booker in pick 37, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick40
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
Nick Emmanwori at pick No. 40 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick53
Rnd2
Dylan Fairchild
They took Dylan Fairchild at par in Round 2, Pick 21, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick71
Rnd3
Kaleb Johnson
You do not let a running back like Kaleb Johnson reach the 71st pick and blink. They did not. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick84
Rnd3
Jake Majors
They jumped the gun on Jake Majors, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick142
Rnd5
Savion Williams
They barely believed it either: Savion Williams still on the board at the Round 5 slot. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
