Draft Grade — 49ers

The phones sank the 49ers this weekend: D-.

The tape said wait; the 49ers did not. Cam Skattebo went at No. 75, a good 35 picks before the board was ready. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D- is the result.

The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Getting Moore where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.

Pick Analysis
Pick11 Rnd1 Mykel Williams
In pick No. 11 they get juice off the edge. A real need, handled.
Pick43 Rnd2 Tyleik Williams
A tidy little value on Tyleik Williams in No. 43, a step better than break-even. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick51 Rnd2 Jayden Higgins
A straight-up fair deal on Jayden Higgins at the 51st overall pick, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick75 Rnd3 Cam Skattebo
A wild overpay on Cam Skattebo in slot 75, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick85 Rnd3 Dylan Fairchild
They reached a country mile for Dylan Fairchild at the 85th pick, and the board is aghast. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick100 Rnd3 Jared Wilson
They took Jared Wilson at par in Round 3, Pick 36, which is nothing to complain about. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick113 Rnd4 Anthony Belton
Anthony Belton at the Round 4 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick147 Rnd5 Malachi Moore
A tidy bit of business in the 147th pick, where Malachi Moore graded well above the range. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick160 Rnd5 Ryan Fitzgerald
No edge and no loss on Ryan Fitzgerald in the 160th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick227 Rnd7 Phil Mafah
They did well to land Phil Mafah in pick No. 227, just ahead of his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick249 Rnd7 LaJohntay Wester
No drama and no debate, LaJohntay Wester went about where he belonged in pick 249. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick252 Rnd7 Shilo Sanders
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Shilo Sanders well ahead of where he belonged. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
