Good, not great, for the 49ers: B-. If confidence were a draft strategy, the 49ers would have aced it. Oronde Gadsden II at slot 147 is 47 spots clear of where he belonged.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. The Simon value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. Job largely done: offensive lineman settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Derrick Harmon
In the 25th pick they get a load in the middle at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick26
Rnd1
Tyleik Williams
In the Round 1 slot they get a run-stuffing presence up front, even if it was a touch early. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick45
Rnd2
Jaylin Noel
They paid a round early for Jaylin Noel in pick 45, more than the board wanted. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick89
Rnd3
Anthony Belton
Anthony Belton at Round 3, Pick 25 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick100
Rnd3
Jordan Phillips
They took Jordan Phillips at par in slot 100, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick121
Rnd4
RJ Harvey
A real head-scratcher, RJ Harvey in the 121st overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick138
Rnd4
Cody Simon
A tidy bit of business in No. 138, where Cody Simon graded well above the range. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick147
Rnd5
Oronde Gadsden II
Oronde Gadsden II at pick No. 147 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick160
Rnd5
Seth McLaughlin
Seth McLaughlin at the Round 5 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick166
Rnd5
KeAndre Lambert-Smith
KeAndre Lambert-Smith in the 166th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
