FutureA+
The 49ers checked most of the boxes and earned a B-. Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The 49ers spent pick No. 228 on J.C. Davis, a name the board had a full 68 spots lower.
Landing Smith that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through wide receiver.
A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one. Job largely done: offensive lineman settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Walter Nolen
Walter Nolen in the Round 1 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick45
Rnd2
Kyle Kennard
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Kyle Kennard well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick75
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
They jumped the gun on Donovan Jackson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick97
Rnd3
Billy Bowman Jr.
Billy Bowman Jr. in the 97th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick99
Rnd3
Cody Simon
They reached into another round for Cody Simon, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick112
Rnd4
Sai'vion Jones
A wild overpay on Sai'vion Jones in Round 4, Pick 11, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick139
Rnd4
Luke Lachey
Luke Lachey in the 139th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick148
Rnd5
Brashard Smith
Circle this one: Brashard Smith at No. 148 is a fall that decides a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick189
Rnd6
JJ Pegues
A straight-up fair deal on JJ Pegues at pick No. 189, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick228
Rnd7
J.C. Davis
J.C. Davis at pick 228 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick232
Rnd7
Jackson Hawes
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jackson Hawes in the Round 7 slot, miles early. It fills a real need, too.
Pick238
Rnd7
Zeek Biggers
A tidy little value on Zeek Biggers in slot 238, a step better than break-even. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick255
Rnd7
Nohl Williams
Value said wait; Nohl Williams in Round 7, Pick 37 says they were not listening. A minor need, but a need all the same.
