Nobody dealt better than the Bears this weekend: B. Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Bears spent No. 78 on Hayden Conner, a name most had 62 spots down the list. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
The Neal steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Good work on the whole, with cornerback the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Jack Sawyer
In pick 17 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick39
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
A straight-up fair deal on Tyler Booker at No. 39, value and slot in agreement. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick51
Rnd2
Omarr Norman-Lott
Omarr Norman-Lott at the 51st overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick58
Rnd2
Hollin Pierce
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Hollin Pierce well ahead of where he belonged. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick63
Rnd2
Jack Nelson
A big swing on Jack Nelson at the 63rd pick, well ahead of any board in the building. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick72
Rnd3
Kaleb Johnson
Kaleb Johnson in pick No. 72 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick76
Rnd3
Tyler Warren
The board fumbled Tyler Warren all the way to No. 76, and they scooped it up. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick78
Rnd3
Hayden Conner
This one needs a full-page explanation: Hayden Conner in Round 3, Pick 14, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick85
Rnd3
Vernon Broughton
Vernon Broughton at the 85th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick95
Rnd3
Jack Bech
No drama and no debate, Jack Bech went about where he belonged in the Round 3 slot. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick121
Rnd4
Jake Majors
Somehow Jake Majors was still sitting there in pick 121, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. It fills a real need, too.
Pick128
Rnd4
Devin Neal
Devin Neal at the 128th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick147
Rnd5
Lathan Ransom
Steal is underselling it; Lathan Ransom at slot 147 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A minor need, but a need all the same.
