Draft Grade — Bears
Overall
B
ValueC

TradesA+
FutureB-
The Bears fleeced the room on the phones and earned a B. If confidence were a draft strategy, the Bears would have aced it. Jay Toia at slot 196 is 129 spots clear of where he belonged. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
Getting Mafah where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The phones were where this weekend was really won. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Will Campbell
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term starter on the line. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick42
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
Sonny Styles in Round 2, Pick 10 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick48
Rnd2
JT Tuimoloau
A big swing on JT Tuimoloau at the 48th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick78
Rnd3
Tyler Booker
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Tyler Booker in pick 78, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
Pick81
Rnd3
Emery Jones Jr.
Emery Jones Jr. at the 81st overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick108
Rnd4
Miles Frazier
Value said wait; Miles Frazier in slot 108 says they were not listening. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick114
Rnd4
Donovan Jackson
Donovan Jackson at pick 114 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick119
Rnd4
Smael Mondon Jr.
Smael Mondon Jr. in the Round 4 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick120
Rnd4
Jonah Monheim
They talked themselves into Jonah Monheim at the 120th pick, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick133
Rnd4
Deone Walker
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Deone Walker. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick136
Rnd4
Tyler Warren
Tyler Warren at the 136th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick138
Rnd4
Benjamin Morrison
Benjamin Morrison at Round 4, Pick 37 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick154
Rnd5
Jordan Hancock
Jordan Hancock in pick No. 154 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick194
Rnd6
Xavier Nwankpa
Xavier Nwankpa at slot 194 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick195
Rnd6
Jihaad Campbell
Taking Jihaad Campbell in the 195th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick196
Rnd6
Jay Toia
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jay Toia this early at Round 6, Pick 21. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick237
Rnd7
Phil Mafah
A running back of that caliber at the Round 7 slot is the definition of value, full stop. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick247
Rnd7
Donovan Edwards
Somehow Donovan Edwards was still sitting there in pick No. 247, and they pounced on premier running back value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick249
Rnd7
Julian Fleming
A wild overpay on Julian Fleming in pick 249, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It fills a real need, too.
