Draft Grade — Bears

The Bears let Lawson fall into their laps, and walked away with a D-. The Bears clearly saw something nobody else did in Rylie Mills, taking him 65 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. Put together, it is a D-.
The Lawson pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The Bears indulged a want in Mukuba while a need in quarterback stayed open.
For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick9
Rnd1
Ashton Jeanty
In Round 1, Pick 9 they get a centerpiece for the ground game at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick10
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
In the 10th pick they get juice off the edge. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick11
Rnd1
Will Johnson
In the Round 1 slot they get a press-man option on the boundary. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick44
Rnd2
Tyler Warren
No drama and no debate, Tyler Warren went about where he belonged in pick No. 44. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick45
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
A tidy bit of business in slot 45, where Tyler Booker graded well above the range. The roster fit checks out.
Pick55
Rnd2
Trey Amos
Trey Amos at the 55th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick64
Rnd2
Xavier Watts
Xavier Watts in the Round 2 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick68
Rnd3
Rylie Mills
They left a pile of value on the table to take Rylie Mills this early at pick No. 68. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick69
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Andrew Mukuba in the 69th pick leaves quarterback for later.
Pick70
Rnd3
Dylan Fairchild
The board had Dylan Fairchild higher than No. 70, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick86
Rnd3
Lathan Ransom
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending Round 3, Pick 22 on Lathan Ransom with quarterback unsolved.
Pick87
Rnd3
Danny Stutsman
They paid sticker price for Danny Stutsman in pick 87, and that is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick103
Rnd4
Tez Johnson
A quiet steal in No. 103: Tez Johnson for less than the market said. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick120
Rnd4
Jake Majors
They robbed the room for Jake Majors here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick135
Rnd4
Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo at the 135th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick151
Rnd5
Trey Zuhn III
They reached into another round for Trey Zuhn III, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick152
Rnd5
Deontae Lawson
A linebacker of that caliber at slot 152 is the definition of value, full stop. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick179
Rnd6
Tahj Brooks
You do not let a running back like Tahj Brooks reach Round 6, Pick 4 and blink. They did not. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
