kk DRAFTING FOR THEChiefs

Draft Grade — Chiefs
Overall

FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Chiefs a B-. Nobody else had Tykee Smith anywhere near the 252nd overall pick. The Chiefs did, by 94 spots, and that gap is the whole story. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. Edwards at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Troy Franklin
In No. 31 they get a true top target. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick63
Rnd2
Brian Thomas Jr.
They paid up for Brian Thomas Jr. at pick No. 63 when waiting would have done the job. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick94
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
A tidy little value on Brenden Rice in pick 94, a step better than break-even. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick131
Rnd4
Darius Robinson
Darius Robinson in the 131st overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick163
Rnd5
Jack Nelson
The board had Jack Nelson higher than the Round 5 slot, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick171
Rnd5
Donovan Edwards
Nice patience on Donovan Edwards, who had no business lasting to Round 5, Pick 35. It fills a real need, too.
Pick175
Rnd5
Gabe Hall
No drama and no debate, Gabe Hall went about where he belonged in pick 175. The roster fit checks out.
Pick209
Rnd6
Joshua Gray
The board had cheaper options than Joshua Gray at the 209th overall pick, and it noticed. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick252
Rnd7
Tykee Smith
Value said wait; Tykee Smith in slot 252 says they were not listening. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
