Middle Tennessee Faces a Total Rebuild as Derek Mason Enters a Pivotal Third Year
Middle Tennessee is coming off a 3-9 (2-6 Conference USA) season, its second straight three-win campaign, and the Blue Raiders closed it on an encouraging note by winning their final two games behind their two highest-scoring outputs of the year. That finish is about the only continuity in Murfreesboro. Derek Mason enters a potential make-or-break third season with a record of 6-18 at the school, and he has again overhauled his staff, this time installing first-year offensive coordinator Anthony Scelfo and a wave of new assistants. Brian Stewart runs the defense.
The bigger challenge is personnel. Quarterback Nicholas Vattiato and the top skill players from the 2025 offense are gone, leaving one of the leaner returning rosters in the league on both sides of the ball.
Offense
There is at least stability under center. Sophomore Roman Gagliano takes over for good after stepping in when Vattiato was injured, and he made the most of the chance, throwing for 1,005 yards with seven touchdowns and no interceptions across five appearances while completing 57.8 percent of his 135 attempts. Mason praised him for finishing the year playing some of his best football, and the experience he banked should ease the transition into a new system.
Scelfo inherits very little proven production here. AJ Jones, a senior who caught 28 passes for 216 yards, is the lone official returning starter on offense. Cam'ron Lacy is the top returning wideout after making five starts and pulling in 38 receptions for 549 yards, and both are viewed as capable pass catchers. With the top four receivers from last season departed, senior transfer Markus Allen was brought in to add a body to the rotation. At tight end, Evan Poticher and Tayvion Galloway are the names in the mix.
The backfield leans on newcomers to replace versatile do-it-all back Jekail Middlebrook, who left for Virginia after piling up 752 rushing and 412 receiving yards. Kansas State transfer Antonio Martin Jr. is the experienced addition, having run for 129 yards in five games last year, including an 89-yard afternoon on just five carries against Utah. He shares the load with sophomore DJ Taylor, who averaged 7.7 yards a carry, albeit on only 26 attempts.
The front has to be better after surrendering 30 sacks for 224 lost yards, and it must do so having weathered a midseason change at offensive line coach. Otto Janse Van Rensburg is a welcome returnee up front after earning all-league freshman recognition and starting five of six games before a leg injury ended his season. The Blue Raiders also imported size, adding massive Minnesota transfer Reese Tripp, a 6-foot-7, 383-pound tackle who topped the spring depth chart, and Virginia Union transfer Adrian Crespin, a second-team all-conference center at the Division II level.
Defense
The defense showed slight improvement while still allowing 30.9 points and 399.3 yards per game, with the run defense the clear bright spot at 143.1 rushing yards allowed, second in the league. The catch is that all three returning starters who anchored that front are now gone, and the unit returns only 7.5 of its 23 sacks. Sophomore Zeion Simpson-Smith is the building block, an all-freshman pick who posted three sacks and a fumble recovery among his 21 tackles and is due for a larger role. Aidan Butts and Felix Hixon are also in the mix up front.
This is the closest thing to a strength on defense. Senior Reggie Johnson leads all returnees after logging 34 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks, and Korey Smith, who added 40 tackles, gives the group another experienced piece. The rebuild is real here too, though, with the team's four leading tacklers from 2025 all needing to be replaced.
Cornerback Jackson Lowe is the anchor, a sophomore who returned an interception among his contributions and broke up four passes for a secondary that finished 11th in the conference against the pass. Christofer Noble chipped in 28 stops with 1.5 sacks, and Washington transfer Dyson McCutcheon joins at corner after playing 24 games over three years there, though he sat out 2025 with an injury. Kalen Woods is another safety in the mix. With seven of the team's 10 interceptions to replace, the back end needs new playmakers to emerge.
The kicking game is a relative asset. Punter Ashton Logan is back after averaging better than 44 yards on 66 punts and dropping 29 inside the opponent's 20-yard line, a top-four mark in the league. Division III Susquehanna transfer Dominic Bourgeois, who was a perfect 20 of 20 on field goals last year, is in line for the placekicking job. DJ Taylor handles return duties, averaging 17.4 yards on kickoff returns.
Overview and Prediction
The schedule offers a marquee nonconference test with a trip to Kansas, but the season will be defined by the Conference USA slate. Mason took genuine encouragement from how his team closed 2025, and the return of Gagliano gives the offense a foundation. The problem is scope: the Blue Raiders lose heavily on both sides of the ball and are counting on transfers to fill key roles across the depth chart, which is why the preseason consensus slots them near the bottom third of the league, around eighth or ninth.
With coordinator turnover a recurring theme of the Mason era, continuity and portal hits will determine whether this group can climb. Expect another difficult year and a make-or-break verdict on the head coach unless the new pieces gel faster than expected.
