Draft Profile: Bio
Born on March 9th in Silver Spring, Maryland, Walter Rouse quickly established himself as a presence on the offensive line at Sidwell Friends School in Washington D.C. Throughout high school, he earned multiple accolades, including being named to the 2017 All-USA Today D.C. second team and the DCSAA All-State Offensive Line. His leadership and skill were further recognized in 2018 with the Sidwell Friends Coaches Award, All-Met Honorable Mention, and a first-team All-USA Today D.C. selection. His performances in high school football led to an invitation to the Pro Football Hall of Fame World Bowl and nominations for the 2019 Big 33 Game and Gatorade Player of the Year.

As a three-star recruit ranked as the 37th offensive tackle nationally, he chose Stanford University, where he immediately made an impact. Following an injury to the starting left tackle, Rouse started 11 games as a true freshman. His freshman year performance earned him a spot on The Athletic’s Freshman All-America Second Team. He continued to start for Stanford over the next seasons, receiving All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention in 2020 for his consistent play on the line.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Effective at using his core and hips to generate torque, enhancing his run blocking capabilities.
  • Shows a firm base and well-timed hand strikes in pass protection, maintaining good knee bend and balance.
  • Excellent awareness and quick to react to stunts and pressures, showcasing accelerated vision.
  • Independent arm technique allows early control over edge rushers, forcing them to widen their approach.
  • Strong ability to re-anchor after initial displacement by speed-to-power rushes, thanks to his lower body strength.
  • Capable of sealing defenders and managing distance with his long arms and strong grip.
  • Displays quick feet and good balance as a side seal/cut blocker in the zone run game.
  • Maintains engagement through the duration of plays, which terminates effectively once he properly latches on.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Shows limited athleticism for an OT, particularly noticeable in vertical pass sets.
  • Tendency to lunge and reach when stressed, leading to balance and body control issues.
  • Struggles with foot quickness and lateral movement, which are essential for effective pass protection against quality rushers.
  • Often punches too early in pass sets, resulting in a compromised posture and inefficiency.
  • Heaviness in foot movement makes it challenging to redirect efficiently, affecting his performance against agile defenders.
Scouting Report: Summary
Walter Rouse enters the NFL draft with upside as a potential interior offensive lineman, underscored by his significant collegiate starts and power at the point of attack. His transition from tackle to guard could mitigate some athletic shortcomings, particularly his struggles with vertical sets and lateral movement. Rouse's effective use of hand strikes and ability to anchor down suggests he could move inside, where his limitations in space are less detrimental.

Despite a sturdy base and strong grip that enable him to neutralize defenders in tight quarters, Rouse's draft evaluation must consider his deficiencies in pass protection agility and recovery quickness. His proclivity for early hand usage and subsequent balance issues often leave him susceptible to quick pass-rush moves.

Projected as a Day 3 pick, Rouse's role on an NFL team will hinge on his ability to adapt to a more confined playing space inside. His skill set fits best in a power-run scheme where his drive blocking and ability to seal defenders play to his strengths. Teams looking for depth and developmental prospects on their offensive line might find value in Rouse's run-blocking prowess and foundational skills.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
