Draft Profile: Bio
At Toledo, St. John’s High School Tycen Anderson earned first-team all-conference accolades, first-team all-district, and first-team all-state honors as a senior after he logged five interceptions, 40 tackles, and six blocked kicks. He also played in basketball and track & field and took third in the state in the long jump as a junior. He was awarded a three-star recruiting grade and signed for his hometown college at Toledo.

Anderson played right away as a true freshman and saw action in 14 games at backup safety and made 30 tackles and four pass breakups. The following year in 2018 as a sophomore he played in 13 games at free safety, starting one, and logged 44 tackles, and four pass breakups while playing on a total of 490 snaps.

In 2019 Anderson won the started job at strong safety and played 12 games while playing on 777 snaps he totaled 59 tackles, 11 stops, and a QB rating when targeted of 86.0 on the year.

Anderson received his first major accolade following the 2020 season with a second-team ALL-MAC selection. After playing 6 games in a shortened season he finished second on the team with 34 tackles, 4 pass breakups, a TFL, and a QB rating when targeted of 44.3.

Ahead of the 2021 season, Anderson was a preseason All-MAC selection by Athlon and Phil Steele and on the watch list for Jim Thorpe Award as nation’s top defensive back. After missing the first three games due to a knee injury Anderson managed to chalk up 44 tackles, 2 TFL, 1 sack, 2 PBUs, a forced fumble, and a disappointing QB rating when targeted of 114.0 (on 31 targets). He also won a spot on the ALL-MAC first team at safety at the end of the season.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Strong safety type body with excellent length, strength and elite speed
  • Very strong tackler who wraps up well and is a hard hitter - who played most of his snaps from the slot or in the box
  • Has elite speed that allows him to run with even the swiftest receivers down the field
  • Excellent feet - has fluid hips and is able to transition well out of his backpedal
  • Super explosive shown at the combine with a 4.36 40 and an impressive broad jump at 123"
  • Has been a major contributor on special teams and so will provide versitility
  • Has decent anticipation reads and reacts with discipline
  • Has good body control and balance to redirect and break down in the open field.
  • Shows good awareness, following the eyes of the quarterback and breaking on the ball with excellent quickness and aggression.
  • Patient and flexible in his drops and looks natural in space. Aggressive with an active playing style to work through the action - has a constant motor
  • Has an NFL frame with strong hands, the ability to close quickly on underneath routes, and the size to tackle with a thump.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • In coverage he rarely manages to get a good jam at the line and instead hangs back - surprisingly considering his frame
  • Is not aggressive in coverage and rarely competes for the ball in contested catch situations - seems happier to break up the pass than make an interception
  • Does not look confident in coverage and seems unsure leading him to become handsy and risk interference penalties
  • Is not natural in coverage and struggles to display a inconsistent technique
  • Looks too tight in coverage when attempting to cover the twitchier receivers. Has problems covering on intermediate and short routes
  • NFL quarterbacks may take advantage of his aggressiveness in man and zone to eye up short routes and go over the top
  • In his most recent playing season - he was a bit of liability in coverage demonstrated by a 114 QB rating when targetted
  • Not fully consistent on making the interception in front of receivers. Best lined well off the line of scrimmage due to a high, stiff backpedal.
  • Can be slow to react in coverage although has been masked by his catch up speed
Scouting Report: Summary
Tycen Anderson is an elite athlete with perfect size, length, and speed for the position combined with strong tackling skills makes him seem on the surface like a quality prospect. However, Anderson really struggles in coverage, is very raw, and really needs to develop his skills if he ultimately wants a starting spot at the pro level. Currently, his skillset limits his NFL role to a short area box safety and we doubt he could hold up as a three-down player.

Anderson may be over-drafted due to his elite measurables by a team hoping to develop his raw talent into something a little more polished, but we can see his value as no higher than the fifth/sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
