As a junior in 2020 he played 6 games and made no impact as a receiver.
As a senior in 2021 he played 14 games and had 17 catches for 165 yards for an average of 9.7 yards per catch, 3 TDs, and an excellent QB rating when targeted of 115.0. In pass protection he gave up one pressure and no sacks.
As a fifth-year senior in 2022 he was finanlly featured in the passing game as he played 11 games and had 34 catches for 386 yards for an average of 11.4 yards per catch, 3 TDs, and an excellent QB rating when targeted of 125.8.
Honors & awards
- Two-time All-Big Ten selection (third team, coaches, honorable mention, media in 2022; honorable mention, coaches and media in 2021)
- Shared Most Improved Player (Offense) honors in 2021
- Five-year letterman (2018-19-20-21-22)
- Has appeared in 43 games with 20 starts, playing special teams only in six games
Scouting Report: Strengths
- An impressive athlete who improved his stock at the combine and pro day. Displayed serious agility as he put up a three-cone in the 95th percentile as well as elite explosion with a 97th percentile broad jump
- Has a strong, athletic frame with room for an additional 10 pounds of muscle mass.
- Soft, reliable hands center the big target for quarterbacks. Shields the defense and will let the ball into his pads to protect it when about to absorb a big hit over the middle.
- Has surprising deep speed given his large frame - ran a 4.63 forty. This will be a matchup issue for linebackers at the next level
- Soft hands. Flashes good to very good tracking and overall body control to make catches outside of his frame.
- Good short-area foot quickness with very good footwork.
- Schoonmaker runs precise routes, showing an innate feel for setting up defensive backs to create separation.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Doesn't really display power as a run blocker. He'll need to improve his strength significantly to be a full-time tight end at the next level
- Schoonmaker has constantly ran a limited route tree as a senior in 2022 and before that was featured little as a receiver in any fashion
- Is a bit stiff as a route-runner, showing only average flexibility and burst out of his breaks
- His ball skills are just average and doesn't fight for the ball as much as you would like
- Is an overaged prospect - will be 25 as a rooke
Scouting Report: Summary
Luke Schoonmaker is an impressive athlete who has a nice combination of size, length, speed, agility, and overall explosion and finally put up decent numbers in 2022 for Michigan. However, prior to 2022 Schoonmaker was virtually invisible in the passing game and so he has a very limited body of work to review. His ability as a run blocker is just average and will need to bulk up to be effective at the next level.Pro teams will hope that Shcoonmaker becomes a much better pro than a college player and as a developmental prospect. He'll likely be taken in or around the fourth round of the 2023 NFL draft.

For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.
*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
