Draft Profile: Bio
Bub Means, born Jerrod Means on January 10, 2001, emerged as a standout wide receiver prospect from Lovejoy High School in Georgia. During his high school career, he showcased his athleticism on the gridiron, tallying over 800 receiving yards and 11 touchdown receptions. Means continued his football journey in college, starting at Louisiana Tech before transferring to Pittsburgh.
At Pitt, Means found his footing, recording 90 receptions for 1,552 yards and 10 touchdowns over his collegiate career. His breakout season came in 2023, where he led the team in receiving with 721 yards and 6 touchdowns, earning him an Honorable Mention All-ACC recognition.
In addition to his on-field achievements, Means' journey is marked by perseverance and determination. Despite facing challenges and transfers throughout his collegiate career, he remained focused on his goals, ultimately earning an invitation to the 2024 East-West Shrine Bowl.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- An impressive athlete with very quick acceleration to reach his top speed quickly and stretch the field. Very good body control and smooth movements. Plays fast and explosive.
- Strong runner with the ball with enough agility to make defenders miss in the open field.
- Elite leaping ability demonstrated by his 90 plus percentile vertical jump at the Combine
- Effective at using his body to shield defenders and win contested catches.
- Capable of producing significant yardage after the catch, enhancing his threat in open spaces.
- Displays good initial burst and hand strength, vital for breaking press coverage.
- His experience as a cornerback has honed his understanding of defensive schemes.
- Ability to adapt to various formations, showing potential versatility at the next level.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Route running requires further refinement; struggles with precision and timing in breaks.
- Occasionally exhibits lackluster effort in blocking and completing routes.
- Inconsistencies in hand technique lead to preventable drops.
- Effort in run-blocking and creating separation at the breakpoint sometimes lacks intensity.
- Has shown vulnerability to physical coverage that disrupts his route progression.
Scouting Report: Summary
Bub Means profiles as a developmental vertical threat with some elite raw physical tools that intrigue at the next level. His size-speed combo and ability to high-point the football make him a potential asset in the red zone and deep field situations. Despite these traits, Means must refine his route tree and demonstrate a more consistent catching technique to survive against NFL-caliber defensive backs. His tape shows potential but lacks the polish needed for an immediate impact, making him a classic late-round flier for teams betting on physical upside.
Concerns around Means' game include his sporadic effort in run blocking and his tendency to let physical press coverage knock him off his routes. These areas of weakness will need significant coaching up at the pro level to avoid becoming a liability. If he can hone his craft and iron out the inconsistencies, Means has the potential to evolve from a situational deep threat into a more complete receiver. His journey through the NFL will be determined by his ability to adapt and refine the finer points of his game.
