Draft Profile: Bio
Isheem Young, safety out of North Texas, brings a diverse college football pedigree to the NFL Draft. The Philadelphia native first made waves at Iowa State, earning Big 12 Co-Defensive Freshman of the Year honors in 2020. Young's collegiate journey included stops at both Iowa State and Ole Miss before concluding at North Texas.

During his time with the Cyclones, Young quickly established himself as a playmaker in the secondary. He recorded 106 tackles over two seasons, including a freshman campaign where he led all Big 12 first-year players with 50 tackles. Young's impact extended beyond tackles, as he tied for sixth nationally with three forced fumbles in 2020.

Young's transition to Ole Miss saw him start nine games in 2022, accumulating 66 tackles and further honing his skills against SEC competition. His final season at North Texas provided an opportunity to reunite with familiar coaching and showcase his abilities in a new system.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Exhibits plus play speed and straight-line burst, allowing him to close quickly on ball carriers and receivers.
  • Stout frame with good play strength for the position, enabling him to match up effectively against tight ends.
  • Displays a nose for the football, with a knack for forcing turnovers and disrupting plays in the backfield.
  • Versatile defender capable of lining up at multiple spots in the secondary and contributing in various packages.
  • Shows comfort playing in the box, demonstrating willingness to mix it up in run support.
  • Possesses functional man coverage skills, particularly when matched up against tight ends or slot receivers.
  • Brings valuable experience against top-tier competition from his time in Power 5 conferences.
  • Demonstrates quick processing skills, allowing him to diagnose plays and react swiftly.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Lacks ideal length for the safety position, which may limit his range and ability to contest catches at the catch point.
  • Shows inconsistent tackling technique, occasionally struggling to wrap up and finish plays in space.
  • Can be overaggressive in run support, leading to overcommitment and missed tackles.
  • Zone coverage skills need refinement, particularly in reading route combinations and maintaining proper depth.
  • Production dipped in final season, raising questions about consistency and ability to maintain a high level of play.
Scouting Report: Summary
A hard-hitting safety with a compact build, Young brings a physical presence to the secondary. His ability to play downhill and contribute in run support could make him an asset in subpackages at the next level. Young's experience in multiple defensive systems suggests scheme versatility, but he'll need to sharpen his coverage skills to become a three-down player in the NFL.

Young's potential as a box safety or dimebacker in subpackages could attract teams looking for defensive back depth. His special teams experience and willingness to contribute in the third phase of the game may help him carve out an initial role while he develops. To stick on an NFL roster long-term, Young will need to improve his consistency in coverage and refine his tackling technique.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
