Scouting Report: Strengths
- Plays with leverage at the point of attack whether inside or outside. Keeps eyes in the backfield when inside; moves linemen to either side with strong hands.
- Mullens looks like a potential pro starter and top 120 pick, ideally suited for a team that utilizes a rotation-heavy defensive line.
- Made Bruce Feldman's Freak's List - ranked #53. He wrote, "At 6-4, 303 pounds, Mullens had 29 tackles, three TFLs, and two sacks in 2021. His numbers in the strength and conditioning program are even more impressive. He power-cleans 375 pounds, back-squats 741 and bench presses 435. His feet are really good too, clocking a 1.67 10-yard split and a 4.32 pro agility time. He has vertical-jumped 30 1/2 inches."
- Combines strength and footwork to fill holes inside, as well. Recovers from cut blocks or falling on his way to make a tackle.
- Flashes exciting burst off the snap to penetrate. Can slip through gaps with his get-off and is an intimidating force for quarterbacks to avoid.
- His long limbs and strong core strength allow him to power through blockers, and Mullens has the flexibility to loop inside and get home on twists.
- He’s very good with his hands, a technician with the violence, quickness and the long arms to ward off blockers. Mullens has a great motor and enough creativity to make plays late in the down as a pass rusher.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Mullens lacks suddenness as a mover, and Mullens isn’t going to do much in the pass rush when working one-on-one.
- He’s squat and short, and he will have a tough time warding off blockers as a pass rusher.
- He’s a straight-line mover and tends to struggle to disengage from blockers due to a lack of ideal length.
