Scouting Report: Strengths
- With a powerful lower body and the ability to hold up at the point of attack as a run defender, Chatman is remarkably instinctive.
- Lower than offensive lineman on every short-yardage play. Good agility and ability to change direction for his size.
- Made Bruce Feldman's Freak's List - ranked #65. He wrote, "..a 6-1, 220-pounder who ran wind-aided 10.08 and 10.09 100-meter times this spring and blazed a 10.22 in May at an event in Austin, but Chatman is the SMU player for now we’re spotlighting. Not only is he pound for pound one of the strongest people in college football, Chatman is one of the strongest period. On the field, Chatman made 25 tackles, 10 TFLs and 2.5 sacks. In the weight room, the 6-1, 295-pound Shreveport, La., product bench pressed 495 pounds this offseason and has done 42 reps at 225. He also back-squatted 615 and power-cleaned 335, and did this muscle-up weighing 290."
- His motor is excellent, and he’s quick to locate the ball and make plays against the run.
- Chatman has a wide base and a low center of gravity to hold his ground, as well as the upper-body strength to shed blockers.
- He’s very instinctive when it comes to countering and solid with overall hand usage.
- He’s quick to react and locate the ball, and he shows enough speed to succeed in backside pursuit. Chatman plays with excellent balance and a strong, flexible core, rarely ending up on the ground.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Chatman has to develop a counter move or two in the pass rush, and Chatman needs to make better use of his hands.
- He’s a straight-line mover who doesn’t have the range to chase in pursuit.
- Might be limited to one-gap systems. Agility isn't a question but misses tackles when he doesn't square and break down.
