Scouting Report: Strengths
- Johnson has decent enough flexibility to bend the edge, and Johnson shows a good closing burst.
- Elite athletic skills -- Made Bruce Feldman's Freaks List at number 4. He wrote "Johnson had a dominant showing in the Ducks’ spring game, making five TFLs and four sacks. Those numbers are as jaw-dropping as the results the 6-4, 275-pounder has produced in the Oregon training program, posting a blazing 22.88 mph on the GPS to go with a 455-pound bench and 655-pound sumo deadlift."
- He shows impressive speed and overall athleticism when moving laterally in pursuit as a run defender.
- Tougher between the tackles than many expect. Fluid and quick drop into zone, covers enough ground to be Tampa-2 "MIKE" and knows where the markers are.
- He has the strong core and powerful hands to shed blockers, and he shows excellent instincts with the ability to quickly locate the ball.
- He can win on the edge in a number of ways. He’s a natural knee bender with the powerful lower body to drive blockers back with the bull rush.
- Good at using long arms to disengage from blockers and make plays. Is quick off the snap and an effective blitzer.
- He disrupts plays in the backfield regularly. Johnson also has the agility and pure speed to cover sideline to sideline, moving like a safety and then finishing as a violent and consistent tackler.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Needs to use his hands more violently to defeat blocks while coming after the quarterback at the next level.
- Johnson is so eager to get upfield that Johnson often abandons responsibilities against the run.
- Hips are a bit high, arms are long, and waist is narrow, which limits his ability to anchor and turn. Not much of a pass rusher if there is not an open lane.

Update - 03/25/2023
While walking off the field at Reser Stadium following a tough loss to the Beavers, Ducks linebacker DJ Johnson appeared to punch an Oregon State fan in the back of the head before being dragged away from the situation by Oregon staffers. It's unclear if Johnson will face any discipline or if authorities will get involved. This incident could seriously affect Johnson's draft stock, even if no action is taken against him as it surely displays an awful lack of discipline as a player.
