Draft Profile: Bio
Cade Stover, playing Tight End for Ohio State, has shown serious growth and versatility in his college career. A native of Mansfield, OH, and a product of Lexington HS, Stover was originally recruited as a linebacker but transitioned to defensive end before his freshman season. He flipped from tight end to linebacker in 2020 and 2021, serving in a reserve role, and only became a full-time tight end recently. His 2022 season saw him catch 36 passes for 406 yards and six TDs. In 2023, he improved his totals with 41 receptions for 576 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 14 yards per reception.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Solid, well-proportioned frame with good box-out utility and length.
  • Explosive enough to get deep and manages to get a step on linebackers
  • Agile, able to hurdle defenders in space and recollect strides.
  • Quick in-stride adjustments, effective as a run-after-catch threat.
  • Strong hand strength, can pry passes away from defenders.
  • Reliable catcher with soft hands and strong hand-eye coordination.
  • Clutch in key situations, especially on third-down and in the red-zone
  • Physical after the catch, consistently finishes forward against contact.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Lacks speed to maintain space, and can be run down by faster athletes.
  • No elite athletic trait to heavily rely on.
  • Catch radius is not great, not easily able to pull in off-target passes
  • Needs to adapt to complex defensive schemes to be successful against the more sophisticated and faster-paced play in the NFL
  • Plays too tall in routes, and lacks elite sink and flexibility.
  • Blocking skills are very underdeveloped - due to his overall inexperience in playing offense
Scouting Report: Summary
Cade Stover presents a nice blend of toughness and explosiveness, making him a quality tight end prospect despite his relative inexperience. His transition from pass-rusher to tight end highlights his adaptability, though his rawness in the position manifests in his route running and blocking. Stover's ability to move in traffic and work between zones needs refinement, a skill that should improve with NFL-level coaching. His physicality and assertiveness as a blocker are notable, but he must develop consistency, particularly in driving his feet to maintain blocks.

However, questions about his route-running acumen and ability to separate against man coverage remain. This limitation might restrict him to specific roles or systems in the NFL.

Stover's current skill set and growth potential make him an attractive draft prospect, particularly for teams looking for a physically dominant tight end who can contribute both in the passing game and eventually as a blocker. While he may not project as a dynamic field-stretcher, his strong hands, physicality, and potential to develop into a more nuanced route runner position him as a promising developmental starter in the NFL.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
