Scouting Report: Strengths
- Crazy athletic skills especially considering his size - he stands 6-7 and weighs in at 302 lbs
- Freeland set a new Combine record for offensive linemen with a vertical jump of 37 inches, a 94th percentile forty, and a 99th percentile broad jump
- Has elite short area quickness - has the agility of a giant tight end
- Outstanding on reach blocks, showing good initial quickness and flexibility to seal the backside. He’s a heady player who is quick to recognize and react to twists and stunts up front, and Freeland shows a good sense of timing on combo blocks.
- In the run game, he shows a good burst off the line of scrimmage, with the ability to win at the point of attack. Freeland has enough speed and athleticism to move to the second level and land blocks.
- In pass protection, he exhibits excellent technique while combating aggressive opposing pass rushers consistently.
- His exceptional run-blocking skills shine, particularly when engaging with defenders quickly and effectively in plays.
- Freeland is capable of controlling rushers using his extensive reach and powerful grip to dominate opponents.
- Uses his hands well, with good hand placement to maximize his powerful punch. Freeland shows impressive coordination between his upper and lower body when moving in pass protection.
- While maintaining mobility, he effectively delivers well-timed, forceful hand punches to disrupt opposing defenders.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Lacks instincts as a pass protector, oversetting and getting beat inside.
- Can be beaten off the edge coming out of his stance and lunging to reach speedy wide rushers.
- Sometimes Freeland simply gets too impatient to sit back in his set, reaching and lunging, and displays poor balance.
- Despite being fluid he's still a little waw as a pass protector, looking choppy and unnatural when moving back into his set, often playing too upright.
- Struggles with maintaining proper leverage due to his tall stature
- Has difficulty countering agile edge rushers with quick changes of direction
- Core and hip stiffness limit effectiveness in power absorption.
- Is currently a little bit too lean could do with adding another 20 pounds to hold up against power rushers
Scouting Report: Summary
Freeland is an elite athletic talent, with ridiculous speed, agility, and leaping ability worthy of the best wide receivers in the class. But he's not just a workout warrior - he's actually an excellent player who has improved each and every year at BYU and he projects to being an outstanding pass protector at the next level. Our only main concern with Freeland is his weight, which at just 302 lbs and 6-7 may leave him susceptible to power rushers.Freeland's stock has skyrocketed of late - particularly after the combine and it looks like he'll not last past the end of the second round of the 2023 NFL draft.
