Draft Profile: Bio
Arnold Ebiketie was awarded a Washington Post All-Metro honorable mention in his senior year of High School after compiling 21.5 sacks, 36 TFLs, while catching for 298 yards, and three TDs at receiver while playing both ways for Albert Einstein High in Kensington. Despite having obvious athletic talents he went mostly un-scouted and wasn't awarded a grade by scouting services. He joined Temple in 2017, where he redshirted his freshman year and played sparingly in 2018.He played a little more in 2019 where he was on the field for 120 snaps - but it wasn't until 2020 where he made an impact. Ebiketie led the team in TFLs, sacks, and forced fumbles and ended the season tied for first in the conference in forced fumbles per game (0.5). This performance finally got him noticed and as a result was recognized with a Second Team All-AAC selection by The American and fourth-team All-AAC selection from Phil Steele.
Ebiketie entered the transfer protocol in 2021 and moved onto Penn State where he broke out with an incredible season. While playing in 13 games he logged 62 tackles, an elite 18 tackles for loss, 9.5 Sacks, 12 QB hits, 2 forced fumbles, and a huge 32 QB hurries. Ebiketie’s top-notch senior season led to him being added to the end-of-the-year watch list for the Ted Hendriks Award - which is awarded to the nation’s top defensive end.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Impressive athlete with elite speed (4.6) and quickness combined with ideal size and length for an NFL edge rusher
- Aggressive with good awareness to track the ball and attack. Tenacious, tough, competItIve, versatile as well as having great bend and mobility
- Easily gets to the edge against tackles and turns back into the quarterback without losing vertical yardage - a mismatch for most offensive tackles
- Has the agility and quick-twitch explosion to easily gain inside leverage by shooting gaps
- Has the long arms to keep blockers away from his body and has an impressive interior rush that draws regular double teams
- Relentless and strong off the edge as a pass rusher when fresh. Gets under the pads of tackles to bull rush them into the backfield
- Has a nice bag of pass-rushing tricks that scare the hell out of QBs and the super quick hands to hit an OT in the chest and push them back into the quarterback
- Has the pursuit skills to stay in the action. Anticipates the snap and has the speed to chase down runners from behind
- Is a powerful tackler and easily takes down even the biggest of backs at the point of attack
- Nice lateral quickness and agility - is able to patrol sideline to sideline in the run game
- Has the pure brute strength to move blockers where he wants them to go. Condenses the pocket well with his pure power
- Offers some versatility, rushing from a two-and three-point stance with the playing speed to stand up in space. Flashes strength as a bull rusher and his energy doesn't plateau
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Stands up well against the run but is very pursuit-conscious and will take unneeded wide angles.
- Has mainly been used as a pass rusher and has limited experience as a run defender
- Can play a little too high at times which impacts his leverage
- Not a natural bender and lacks fluid change-of-direction ability. Plays with inconsistent pad level and is sometimes knocked backward off the snap
- Isn't always the first player off the snap and when his initial move doesn't work he can be taken out of the play
- Never totally out of a play, but can get out of control and work himself away from the action.
Scouting Report: Summary
Arnold Ebiketie is an impressive pro prospect who has top-level athletic skills - he's explosive, has elite speed around the edge, some instinctive pass-rushing skills, and the power to drive through blockers to blow up running plays. He's only really been used as a pass rusher so far and so maybe looked initially as being unable to handle being a three-down player and viewed more of a situational edge rusher at the next level, however, we think he can quickly make the transition and view him as an elite prospect.Ebiketie is currently likely to be drafted in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft however we consider his skill set to be worthy of a high second, perhaps even a first-round selection. He has the skill-set to have a major impact in the pros and ultimately prove to be a dominant three-down player.
